Student aan het woord

Fleur (17) in Praag, Tsjechië

My name is Fleur and I am following the course at Vitalis College to become a nurse.

I went on a study tour to Prague for three weeks. We went with a group of about thirty students of our school, who, like me, signed in and made a recommendation. We traveled by train from Breda to Prague in the Czech Republic. It took us one day to travel to Prague and one day to go back to Breda. It was a long and exhausting journey.

In Prague we stayed in hotel Prokopka. In each apartment was room for four students, and we had to share the bathroom, toilet and kitchen with another apartment with four students. With the group of four you had to do all the activities which where organized, fr example going to school. Each week a pair of teachers who stayed for that week at the hotel helped us if there where problems. We did a lot in those three weeks and we‘ve also seen and learned a lot. I really enjoyed the three weeks I’ve spent in Prague. I’m going to tell you something about the things we did during our stay. I’m going to explain it in weeks:

The first week
In the first week we didn’t have to do very much, so we could get used to the city and the new environment. We also made a city tour with a guide so that we would know the way. During the tour the guide told us a few things about the history of Prague wich was very interesting. In this week we also visited the church of Prague and a beer brewery, together with a guide. In our free time I went with my own group to the Prague Zoo and with two of the teachers to a glass fabric. What I liked best was the day we went on practical training in a nursing home for blind people and people with bad vision. We did this in al small groups and each day of the week another group went to the nursing home.

The second week
The second week we had a lot more to do. Three days of this week we went to a school in Prague. The first day we had an introduction and the other days we had to follow lessons in English, German etc. This week we also visited the concentration camp Terezin and we went to an old and a new hospital in Prague. In our free time we went to an aquarium and of course at night we went to the most famous disco in Prague.

The third and last week
In this week we had to go to school for two days and follow classes. And another day we went with a couple of students from the school to a fabric where prostheses where made. The students guided us there and showed us how the prostheses where made. One of the last days we went to an academic hospital where we also got to have a look around. And one of the days I really liked was the day we went rafting and mountain biking. Another day we went bowling with the whole group. After those great last days we had to get our stuff together and had to prepare to go home.

The city of Prague
I think Prague is one of the most beautiful cities I’ve ever seen. It’s really big, so it was hard to get used to this new environment for me, because I live in a small village. The thing I liked most where the bridges and the many shops and of course the beautiful buildings. In my free time I’ve spent a lot of time shopping in and I made a lot of pictures because I thinks the city is so beautiful.

What I didn’t like was the fact that not many people in Prague speak English very well. It was really difficult to speak to them and it quickly seemed like they didn’t like foreigners because of the way they looked at you. But that was mostly in the more distant villages around Prague and at the school.
