Student aan het woord

Wessel Boor, Malta

My name is Wessel Boor, I am currently in the second year of my education IBS, International Business Studies. I follow this education on Zoomvliet College in Roosendaal. I am 19 years old.

I am doing my internship in the country Malta, this is a small island that is approximately 100 km. out of the south coast of Italy. This is Europe’s smallest country with only around 440.000 people living there. And there are almost 350.000 cars on the island, so it is very crowded with cars. It is becoming too full at the moment. There are also always traffic jams in the hours it is the busiest on the road, that is at 1 o clock and at 4 o clock. The busses in this country are not bad. They take you over the whole island for only 50 cent. And they leave every quarter. A good way of traveling it is here.

The houses in Malta all look quit the same, they are all made of limestone. This is really the only stone they have on Malta. So everything is built from it. So you don’t even notice when you come in a other city, because everything looks the same and you will think it is just 1 big city. The streets here are very narrow and the cars drive on the other side of the road. This is strange when you are used to the other side. So you must be careful and look good to both sides.
In Malta there is not that much green. You won’t find a forest here easily. The island is really only houses and a little nature. But when you go to the other island, Gozo, you will see some nice nature and very blue seas.
I lived in the city named Birkirkara, this is nice to live for students, because everything is close by, things like supermarkets and the busses. No problem with living here. My internship is in Attard. This is only a 15 minute walk from my house, so I walk it every day.

The climate in Malta is very good, they only have three cold months in the year, December, January and February. But still these months are not that cold it can even be like 20 degrees in winter here. And in summer the temperatures will rise till 40 degrees sometimes. So if you like the sun it is a good place to live. The only downside is that the wages are much lower than in The Netherlands and the prices in supermarkets are almost the same, so that is a little difficult. But, yes, I can live here, I think.

The city I have worked in is called Attard. It is one of the more wealthy cities in Malta, I always walked to my internship from Birkirkara this was a 20 minutes walk. You see a lot of nice large hotels and villas when you arrive in Attard. The house of the president of Malta is also here. There is always a guard standing in front of the entrance of his house. So it is quite a rich city, I think. It is nice to live in Attard and the people living there are also quite friendly.

I started working in the company of my internship. I chose to do my internship abroad, because that gives me a lot more experience then just a company in The Netherlands. I am working in the country Malta and I have my internship at the company Liberty Business Culture. It is owned by Kevin Spitteri. It is not really a big company, there are only 6 people working in this company, including the person that is the teacher for nails. But small companies like this are common in Malta. Most of the time the companies here are of this size. It is the same with my friend Ruud who I am here with. My job description is manager of wholesale, with different tasks. Of course I am not really a manager, but I try to do the tasks that belong with it. So sometimes I do invoices or preparing orders and deliveries for the delivery man, but sometimes I also supervise other persons and see if they do their work well. Not for real of course, but this is all just to learn. At other times I do packaging or the sales with selling conversations. And with this I am trying to sell our products. That are my tasks, they are very different from each other. So most of these things are my responsibilities. And I try to do as much things as possible and things that also have to do with my assignments. I enjoy this kind of work abroad a lot. And I am sure next year I go for the same experience.

In Malta I have also leisure time for myself of course, so I try to fill it in in a good way. When I just came here I immediately searched for a gym here in Malta because in Holland I also do fitness. I found one close by. At least 3 or 4 times in the week I go to the gym. Always in the evening, except on Saturday, then I sometimes go in the afternoon.

Me and Ruud also made some friends here. We always hang out with them and then they show us the island and the nice places everywhere. And sometimes I also go to the church in the evening at 17:30. Because a lot of people always go to church here. So the mass is quite impressive to be with. And me and Ruud always just pick a bus when we have a free day and go see things on the island. Our do some shopping sometimes, of course. Because the clothes and shoes here are very cheap, I bought some nice clothes and shoes. In the weekends we go out with our Maltese friends. Most of the time we go to Paceville. On Friday evening and Saturday evening. This is really a nice place to go out for the youth and here we always meet new friends. You can meet a lot of nationalities here in Malta. Before we also had some Portuguese and Spanish friends, but they went home again. We also had some parties in our house and invited Maltese friends of us. And I also had some contact with the football club here, Birkirkara fc, and I trained once with them. It is easy to get social contacts her in Malta, because the people here like it if you come from another country.

We also tried some Maltese food. It taste quite nice. On Monday evening we always do our groceries at the local supermarket. And we eat normal things here, like potatoes and meat, but most of the time we eat pasta. That is easy to make and is common to eat here. So we have a lot to do here in Malta and we are enjoying our time here!
